When it comes to Halloween, why buy your costume if you could make it (or better yet, pull it out of your own closet!)?? All week long I’ll share my ideas for inexpensive, homemade Halloween costumes. Enjoy!

When I saw these stripes at J. Crew, I had two important thoughts: 1) chic and 2) I can do a Hamburgler costume out of this!  As with my other Halloween series costumes, I’m doing a loose interpretation out of what’s already in my closet (hat, dress, boots).

Inspiration:

Key Elements:

  • Striped Dress
  • Black Cape
  • Black Hat with Yellow Band
  • Robber’s Mask
  • Hamburger Necktie
  • Red Gloves

Although I had to make a couple of the elements of this costume - it was cheap and easy.  For the tie I cut out foam hamburgers (using taupe for the buns, brown for the burger, and bright yellow for the cheese) and glued them onto red poster board cut into the shape of a tie.  I made the mask by tracing my face with scrap fabric, cutting in felt and gluing two ribbons to each side. I picked up the red gloves for $2 and the cape is actually a bath towel.

Bonus: Actual Hamburger

Cost: $10
Difficulty Level: Easy
Time Commitment: 1.5 hours or less (to make mask and tie)
