When it comes to Halloween, why buy your costume if you could make it (or better yet, pull it out of your own closet!)?? All week long I’ll share my ideas for inexpensive, Homemade Halloween costumes. Enjoy!
You didn’t think I’d miss the chance to do another fox project by creating my own Homemade Halloween Fantastic Fox costume, did ya? I can’t tell you how much I love this costume. I LOVE FOXES!
- Fox Mask (homemade)
- Dark Orange Tights
- Fox Tail (homemade)
- Vintage Dress/Blouse
- Black Gloves and Boots
To make the fox face I started with a store bought eye mask and a dixie cup for the snout length and shape. Then I fine tuned details like the raised eyebrows and smoothed out the nose with paper mâche. This took about an hour and a half and an entire weekend to dry (with the help of a blow dryer on warm/cool).
Once the mask dried, I sprayed brown faux fur with orange wash out hair dye (the kind you get at the party store) and shaped it to the upper portion of the face. At this point, I turned to images of the creation of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox from Vanity Fair for details (like the direction of the fur, where the white/orange should go, the nose, and whiskers). After the fur was hot glued down, I added a cute little leather nose and trimmed the eye openings with thin stripes of leather. Finally I took black feathers, stripped the fluff and applied them at the nose and eyebrows.
Finally I shaped faux fur into ears, sprayed them orange, added white fur to the inside and hot glued them to the mask.
Other key elements - white faux fur (homemade) scarf around the neck, a big fluffy tail (filled with lightweight newspaper for body), rust color tights (We Love Color Tights) and black gloves, socks and booties.
I am so proud of this costume, which I’ll be wearing for Halloween gatherings this month. Funny story - I’ve been trying the mask on and walking to different mirrors in the house and (accidentily) snuck up on the cats AND TOTALLY FREAKED THEM OUT! Dialated pupils, raised fur - oh my goodness! Fear not, I took the mask off immediately and assured them it was just me, but if Raymond and Gizmo think it looks good, I’ll take that as a big stamp of approval.
