Blue and White Vintage Style Dress: Self Made (Butterick 5882)
Why: Ta da! I just finished this dress this morning and I couldn’t wait to wear it out today! It’s a Patterns by Gertie frock (Butterick 5882) that I picked up this winter at a 5/$1 sale at the fabric store. On my first attempt, I went with a very retro, pin up style cherry print, but from a distance it felt a little Christmas-y to me. My vintage loving girlfriends all assured me it was very period appropriate, but I thought I should give it another try in a different fabric.
Then, when I was picking up some extras for the cherry version, I spotted this fabric and I knew I that was it! I bought extra yardage to making cutting out easy, and started it this Sunday. I was inspired to do this 1950s, pin up style after seeing the enviable Dita Von Teese wear a toile dress years ago. I admire her commitment to live in vintage style 24/7 - I wish I was so secure in my personal style (my friend Rebecca wrote about this just yesterday!)
While this fabric isn’t technically a toile, it does have the same feeling - which I love! To complete a modern-yet-retro look, I curled my hair and pinned it to one side, added my charm bracelet and finished everything up with peep toed, ankle strapped navy heels. I’m so proud of the final result!
I’ve been so inspired to sew lately and have been really enjoying tracking down the best sewing blogs online. I also just watched The Great British Sewing Bee and it’s hands down, my favorite reality show of all time. So much so that I’m planning on writing a post about it shortly with more info.
Until then… have a beautiful afternoon!
