WhatIWore: I’m so excited to contribute to the August issue of Redbook magazine with a DIY summer sneaker makeover! See it for yourself on page 78 and jump through here to see the full instructions for how to make these cute and colorful shoes!
White canvas sneakers (or tennies as we called them in my house) have been a summer shoe staple since I was a little girl. They’re pretty inexpensive and the perfect base for a bright and colorful summer DIY project. Let’s get started!
- White Canvas Sneakers
- Painters Tape
- Stiff Angled Brush
- Acrylic Craft Paint
First things first - remove laces and tape off any portion of the shoe that you want to remain the base color (in this case - white).
Pro Tips for a flawless application:
Use a very stiff and dry brush - too much paint can leak under the tape.
Press your tape down firmly before you paint each section (I like to use the edge of my finger nail for a secure hold)
Paint as you would with a stencil - dabbling the paint in short strokes up and down around the edges (again, to help prevent paint leaking and keeping a crisp, straight line).
Once you’ve completed painting each colored section, remove painter’s tape. After you peel away the tape, you’ll probably see a few areas that you want to touch up. Use the same stiff brush you used for the first application and very carefully fill in color where needed.
