Top: vintage, thrifted
Scarf as belt: vintage, thrifted
Shorts: Express
Shoes: DSW

Why:

This top is one of my recent thrift finds, and its been altered by its previous owner. And its way too big, still. So I gathered up the back and safety pinned it from the inside, and then threw on the scarf as a belt over it. And since there’s no “big meeting” that I have to sit in on today, I can wear shorts! Shorts are my favorite thing to wear!!

What I Wore...

Just scrolling through my flickr ‘What I Wore’ stream for an upcoming post and as I pass through— I can remember almost EVERYTHING about the day I wore whatever I had on. The day someone important called me, the first time I met someone else, a particularly good or bad day at work.
work work work

Why:

I hate it when there’s direction at work to “dress up” or “look young”. I especially hate it when I’m supposed to be “trendy and modern”. I don’t really dress to the trends. The most modern thing in my closet was probably bought at Target (or a sample from the office). I just hate the pressureof picking out something to wear to fit someone else’s vague notion of trendy-modern-young-whatever. Ok, so I had on something entirely different this morning and went out and took out my photos and HATED it so much. So I ran home and threw this on. Not exactly within the parameters given. Oops.

Cover Your Bases

Sometime in mid-July my mind starts turning to fall fashion. If you’re looking to take your style to the next level (re: investments), here’s some of my suggestions:

1. High Quality Denim $$$ As a fashion designer working in the denim market, I can tell you that most jeans cost about $12 to produce. That’s for the bare bones sewing and hardware. However, premium denim uses better quality fabrics (premium cotton) and are better designed to fit your body. Buy a dark wash and a boot cut. If you’re unsure on your size, take at least 3 of each size to the dressing room with you (mass produced garments WILL vary, even on the same size). Expect to spend between $100 and $250.

My favorite brands: Joe’s Jeans and Acne.

2. Brown Flat Boots $$$ Your feet are a good place to put your dollars, especially if you’re in a city setting and do a lot of walking. I’ve bought my past two pairs of nice boots at Banana Republic. I’ve worn them to death and had both pairs resoled and tapped. Look for a small lift on the heel (1/2 to 1”) and a rounded toe. On shoes- price and quality usually go hand in hand. These will run you between $200 and $300.

My favorite brand: Banana Republic

3. Black Tights $ I probably go through 2 or 3 pairs of black opaque tights each season. C’mon— they keep you warm and make you look chic. Spend a little more (about $12.50) and you’ll get that great opaque look and lower your risk of them snagging fast.

My favorite brand: We Love Colors

4. Bright Cardigan $-$$$ A cardigan is one of the most multi-purpose items I have in my closet. First and foremost, it’ll keep you warm. Secondly, its a great layering piece and can make a summer dress extend a few weeks into fall’s cooler days. Finally, it can be sexy! Wear it with nothing (or a delicate cami) underneath and you’re straight out of Secretary. Go for it in a bright color. Depending on your budget you can spend a little or a lot here.

My favorite brand: J.Crew

5. Black Turtleneck $$-$$$ No matter what your look, you can look good in a black turtleneck. Its one of those things that goes with EVERYTHING. You can wear it over a dress, with jeans or a cocktail skirt. If you want to be Edie Sedgwick, where it with only tights! If you can afford it, buy cashmere that will last season after season. Otherwise, a go for a blend. I like to avoid wool because I hate itchies.

I wish I could afford: Donna Karen

Photo

When:

I woke up this morning and for some reason it felt like the first day of school. Maybe because I tried this outfit on last night and laid it out, or maybe because my lunch was packed and in the fridge. I love wearing new outfits for the first time— really, who doesn’t? I chopped 4” from this dress and hemmed it (properly, with a hem stitch) and I’m totally loving it.

Sneak Peak at my new thrifted goodies.

Yesterday I went to Beacon’s Closet, armed with two huge shopping bags of old clothes, hoping to sell them off. And sell them I did. They took almost everything and that meant a big payday for me. (Beacon’s Closet will buy your old clothes (must be trend-right or vintage) in exchanges for 35% of the selling price in cash or 55% in store credit). I obviously took the credit, because this is my favorite store.

The goods? Black dress, navy and red dress with matching bolero, pink ruffled sleeveless blouse.

Calling all Questions

Hey friends and fashionistas! In an attempt to make this site more than just me and my camera, I’m going to be posting regular DIY posts and fashion tips. So I ask you…

Is there something you want to know? Are you ok with me using your name and question on the site? If so, please shoot me an e-mail with Question in the subject line and I will do my best to answer! And nothing is too small or too big! Also factor in the heat (94F!!) and a yellow dress is juuuuusttt right. Newly in love with the espadrills (although I’ve switched to flats while I run around the office). TGIF!

wardrobe_remix(ers) of the week

Every Thursday I patiently wait for Tricia Royal (creator of wardrobe_remix) to post her favorites of the week…hoping I might be included.
Why:

Man! I am so in love with my haircut. Everytime I do a radically different hairdo, I sort of try to dress with it for a while. So I am your artsy little hipster mama. My necklace was made by hand (from clay, glazed and put in the klin) by my brother. It works perfectly for this look to not be too tom boy. Ditto on the heels. I’m feeling really great today.

When:

I’m really happy with it… feeling new and fresh! Happy Summertime! Also note— I highly recommend Joseph at Salon De Pops who did the cut. And the prices are amazing.
In attempt to snap myself out of a fashion funk, I went shopping yesterday at Beacon’s Closet. This shirt was one of my goodies. Thrift shopping is so satisifying— you’re recycling garments, you save money, you get to (at Beacon’s anyway) shift through well picked pieces (one of the girls at the counter is styling a shoot for Vogue this week). Its one of my favorite things to do.

Current Fashion Faves

Here’s some things I’m totally digging right now.

Why:

I need to be a little less afraid to wear something twice in a close time frame. Especially if I photographed it, I’m like “oops, nope. can’t wear that, only wore it 2 months ago” which is stupid! I don’t have an endless closet. I like some things more than others. So I wear them all of the time. This is the second time for this cutesty little romper.

When:

Why:

Wow. Ugh. Another day in a row of “I don’t know what to wear.” Luckily I did some ironing over the weekend and I love this top (ditto jeans) so it works. I’m liking white a lot these days.

When:

July 10, 2008

What:

Shades: F21
Scarf: gift from China
Dress: thrifted
Shoes: Target

Where:

office, cocktails

Why:

There comes a point in the season where I am completely sick of all of my clothes— I’ve wore everything once (or twice) and I don’t feel like doing photos or blogging. Its just body covering at this point. So, I got online and spent a good chunk of time looking at style blogs and street photography. This ensemble is a result. The dress sat in a window all summer and acquired a sun stain that I couldn’t get all the way out with bleach. So its belted over in attempts to hide it. I have no problem with wearing blemished clothing. You can always act like it just happened (toothpaste, coffee stain). That’s what I do at least.
