What I Wore: Halloween Special

WhatIWore: Halloween Edition
When:
October 31, 2009
What:
Dress: Betsey Johnson, gift
Corset: self made
Choker: self made
Ring: The Glamourai, gift
Hosiery: Victoria’s Secret
Shoes: Payless
Where:
Out and about on Halloween Night in Brooklyn
Why:
Although I had a full roster of costume ideas in my back pocket, I didn’t feel like wearing any of the was a big enough challenge (I did do an associate’s degree Costume Construction afterall!), so after a day at IKEA with Adam, I sat in bed, unable to nap and thought - Saloon Dancer! So easy too!!! That Betsey Johnson dress just keeps going and going and going! I haven’t ever worn the corset before (outside of modeling our own designs in class some 5 years ago), so I was really happy to put it on. I cut off some of the black ribbon laced up the back for my choker.
Also notice my attempt at a Gibson Girl hairdo. Hairspray, wut?
For Adam’s costume, he just wore a suit, top hat and I powdered his hair and did some dark under eye shadows and a little ‘stache. He brought his own pipe and would say on cue “I drink your milkshake!”
It was warm out and fun and we were back home by 10:30. It was a Happy Halloween.
Also note, my tights were kept under wraps after this photo! Don’t worry, no slutty Halloween for me! Whatever, you guys have seen my legs before.
What I Wore Halloween Guide: Mad Hatter

WhatIWore: When it comes to my Halloween Costumes, I’ve been saving the best for last. A couple of weeks ago, I saw the trailer to Alice and Wonderland and thought the Mad Hatter could be a great costume. Ding ding ding! Here we have it - the grand finale. This was another zero dollar ensemble. To create the hat I used:
- Free party hat from the IFB Dress Up Soiree
- Scarf originally a gift with purchase from vintage etsy seller
- Brooch originally from a flea market
- Feathers originally from DIY project
Next was the actual outfit. I knew I wanted black, green and purple as my key colors, so I went with:
- Vintage Shirt originally from Una Mae’s (in Chicago)
- Two Selfmade Necklaces
- Betsey Johnson dress originally a gift from internship
- Checker board scarf originally one pound from a bin in London
- Green tights originally from We Love Colors
- Purple Shoes originally from Payless
For the Makeup, I used
- Purple eyeshadow and mascara for the eyes
- Purple eyeliner plus gloss on the lips
- Liquid liner for beauty marks
As the week ends, let me know which costume was your favorite and why!
What I Wore Halloween Guide: Karl Lagerfeld

WhatIWore: After powdering up my entire head for the George Washington costume, I could not let my newly white hair go to waste! Onto the King of Fashion himself! The man behind Chanel - Karl Lagerfeld! The costume consists of:
- Chanel Inspired DIY Studded Vintage Jacket originally a gift
- Ruffled Blouse originally from ModCloth
- Black Belt (worn as tie)
- Black Sunglasses originally from Fred Flare
- Black Belt free from old job
- Black Leggings originally free from old job
- Black Boots originally a gift
- Measuring Tape from my sewing kit
For the hair I just took out the rollers and pulled all of my hair into a low pony, just like Uncle Karl does.
If I actually decide to go as Karl, I would probably also do a double C cut out in black felt, stablize it and stud it and then make into a pin for the jacket (just to drive the point home).
I have four costumes down and one to go… have you decided on your costume yet? Share in the comments!
What I Wore Halloween Guide: Little Edie Beale

WhatIWore Guide to Halloween: Little Edie Beale
This is just one of those costumes that your closet is pushing you, begging you, to wear. And its so simple too!
- Brown Turtleneck as head covering originally from Zara
- Vintage Swimsuit originally from etsy
- Tiger Broach at neckline originally from ebay
- Vintage cocktail ring originally my mom’s (at my age!)
- Tights originally from Macy’s
- Shoes originally from Beacon’s Closet
- LOOK magazine (with cousin Jackie on the cover) from thrift store
There was no hair OR makeup to this look and it was ABSOLUTELY FREE! One of the keys to my Halloween costume guide is to be more inspired by what you already have than to think up a character and then get frustrated you have no top hat or fur coat or what have you.
After re-watching Grey Gardens over the summer, a little light bulb clicked and I associated this vintage swim suit with Little Edie and thought it would make a grand costume.
I love using a sweater or turtleneck over the head, but a scarf would be fine too. I also like how the hose (pants?) have the control top sort of lines. Edie would have totally rocked those.
What I Wore of Halloween Past: Twiggy

WhatIWore: In 2008 I went for Halloween as 60s supermodel Twiggy. And I wore this to work. I think the makeup was the real key to pulling this off, along with the vintage dress I wore. Another costume literally just thrown together. See the original post (and a couple more photos here)
