When it comes to Halloween, why buy your costume if you could make it (or better yet, pull it out of your own closet!)?? All week long I’ll share my ideas for inexpensive, homemade Halloween costumes. Enjoy!
For my vintage sailor costume inspiration, I looked no further than my family albums. These are photos of my grandpa, Walter Schroeder Sr. in his World War II naval uniform. Doesn’t he look dapper?
Inspiration:

When I was little, my grandma Dorothy used to take us kids to the American Legion Auxiliary for Halloween parties. She was the coolest grandma in the world because she would also dress up in a costume for these shin digs… and believe it or not, but she won first place in the contest wearing the white sailor uniform pictured here!! How amazing is that?
I wish I could say I was wearing the same sailor top here - I actually bought mine in a thrift store in Paris.
Key Elements:
- Sailor Hat
- Sailor top (or Breton striped tee)
- Navy or White Pants
- Anchor Necklace
All of the elements to this costume were things I had on hand, which makes this an absolutely FREE costume!
Cost: $0
Difficulty Level: Easy
Time Commitment: 30 minutes or less
