Studs & Chanel (inspired) Jacket DIY

WhatIWore: When a DIY moment hits me, I just go for it! This project included a bag of a 1000 studs left over from the Weardrobe Conference and a gifted 60s Chanel style wool jacket. The result - a mix of punk and ladylike chic. I LOVE IT! I’ll be debuting the jacket with an outfit this week, but until then, here’s some details on the project. Enjoy!

This vintage jacket was gifted to me by my aunt Barb (it belonged to her mother Sally). I liked the idea of the jacket, but everytime I attempted to style it, I felt like a candidate’s wife Barbara Bush. This jacket needed a little sass.

First step - g’bye cheap-o buttons!!

Next I started studding the collar (and used this as my guideline for the thickness of the center front and sleeve stud work).

I ordered these studs from SpikesandStuds.com. Using the studs is really simple. You place the stud down on the right side of the fabric and from the back you have to turn the prongs down. I used the edge of my kitchen table as well as my thumbs (which hurt so bad by the time I was done).

After you’ve turned under the prongs as best as possible, use some sort of tool to really press them up onto themselves. I used the rubber handle of a screw driver (and I seriously pounded at it)
This is a REALLY simple project. I’d advise doing a simple pattern with large studs (mine were between 1/4” and 1”) to avoid looking like a 2nd grade Bedazzler project (unless that’s what you’re going for!) I haven’t counted but estimate I used about 1000 studs (or more!). Make sure you have enough before you get started (because its SO addictive! Can’t stop! Won’t Stop!)
I am so happy with the finished result!!! I’ll be wearing the jacket this week!! Stay tuned!
Colorblock DIY

WhatIWore: When I saw this wide shouldered pow of a color combination while thrifting last week, I knew it had potential. I also felt like if I messed it up, it wouldn’t be a big crying shame. I sketched up my ideas and got to work.
- First, I tried it on and marked (with a sharpie!) where I wanted to put the sleeve.
- Next, I got scissor happy.
- Then, I tried it back on and brought in the under arm/side seam by about an inch.
- Afterwards, I found some black piping in my sewing kit. Originally, I thought I’d just make some bias tape from an old black tee. But this worked!
- Sewed it on, turn and stitch in the ditch.
I’m not completely done- I’m still going to hem it up a few inches and I bought a great heavy metal zipper I plan to put on the back. I’m thinking of wearing it to a show during NYFW. Yes?! No?! Maybe?
Friendship Shoe Favorites!

WhatIWore: A few months ago, I encouraged you guys to purchase the Friendship Shoe to support the Fresh Air Fund and DIY them up. Here are my favorites!! Top pair are the ones I worked on, the tangerine steppers are from Mary and the bottom hand painted beauties are from Britteny (which she sent to me and I will be wearing tomorrow!)
So fun!!!

WhatIWore: This little sneaker DIY is coming along nicely!! If you are still planning on entering the contest, please e-mail me with a heads up. After getting in a super rad entry last night, I kicked my bum into gear (obv inspired by you Britteny!)
Progress on the DIY shoes...

WhatIWore: Working on my Payless Friendship Shoes… They are going to be awesome!!!
What I Wore DIY Contest!!

WhatIWore: The folks at Payless gave me a heads up on these canvas Airwalk Friendship Shoes. They are literally a blank canvas to work your creative magic (the come with three markers!!). Payless is donating 100% of the net profits off this shoe to the Fresh Air Fund, an organization that sends inner city kids to summer camps (and if you’ve ever been to camp, you know in your heart what an awesome experience it is).
So, here’s the contest: I am going to decorate a pair of shoes to trade, in the spirit of friendship, with one of you! I’ll wear your shoes on What I Wore and you can wear mine!! I’ll pick my top 3 favorites to feature here and trade with the grand prize winner (as voted for by you!) I have a size 8.5!! I hope to see all of my fellow fashion bloggers and readers to participate!! All entries due by JULY 10!
Here’s where you can buy your own pair.
Whether you decided to decorate a pair or not, they really are a great basic summer shoe and at an excellent price too. And the Fresh Air Fund is really what its all about. :)
