When:

March 25, 2009

What:

Feather clip: self made
Blouse: White Dove NYC vintage
Belt: vintage, thrifted
Skirt: vintage, thrifted
Tights: We Love Colors
Booties: vintage, thrifted

Where:

Work

Why:

I really don’t have a big reason other than getting these fabulous tights in the mail the other day from my favorite tights resource- We Love Colors. I tried on loads of different combinations and this one just stuck. And the feather clip was a last minute project I threw together in about 10 minutes this morning and I think it pulls everything together quite nicely. I feel pretty.

I’ve asked the lovely Lindsay T over at Lindsay T Sews to lend her expertise on buying a sewing machine. See her excellent write up below:

——

When Jessica asked me to be a guest blogger my initial reaction was “gee, how flattering!” Then panic set in as I realized she had given me one of the toughest topics there is: Sewing Machines for Beginners. Ack!

This is a killer subject for two reasons: One, buying a sewing machine is highly personal. What’s good for me may not work for you. It’s like asking me what kind of bra you should buy, as my friend Erica B says. Two, shopping for a sewing machine is more painful than looking for a new computer or car even. Major retailers, like Sears, Target and WalMart, only have a few machines to offer and forget about finding a salesperson with the slightest clue aboutsewing machines. Dealers can be a better option but they can be difficult to work with if you’re trying to do comparison shopping.

So here’s the course of action I recommend for sewists looking for their first sewing machine:

What:

Dress: designed and constructed by yours truly
Belt (worn backwards): mall store
Tights: Target
Boots: Gift

Where:

Work

Why:

Well, this is the third outfit I not only tried on, but took pictures of.  This is why its good to have some really simple pieces in your closet when you just can’t figure out what to wear. The weather in NYC is warmish and that makes heavy wools feel all wrong. But its still no Miami either. Balancing a short sleeve jersey dress with heavy tights and boots works just right for me today. Plus its like wearing an all over body sweatshirt. How cozy!!

What:

Scarf: vintage, thrifted in London
Cardigan: HK
Jeans: Mango
Belt: Goodwill
Boots: vintage, thrifted

Where:

Brunch, shopping, drinks, dinner in Manhattan

Why:

Ahh! It was one of those mornings that I wanted to wear something really great, and ended up having to just run out the door. I’m happy with how this 70s inspired look turned out. I’m going to try to wear scarves more often and I love how this one pulled the entire look together.
